In the 1970s, Rodriguez released two albums, Cold Fact and Coming From Reality, which sold over half a million copies in South Africa, earning him a level of fame comparable to the Rolling Stones. But unlike other well-known American artists, South African fans had no access to any information about him—beyond the album tracks, the only clue was a blurry photo on the cover. After those two albums, he seemed to vanish without a trace.
Rodriguez, however, was completely unaware of his South African success. In the United States he led a very different life: unknown, poor album sales, dropped by his record label, and working manual labor—roofing houses. When Cape Town record store owner Stephen and music journalist Craig heard a bizarre rumor that Rodriguez had died onstage, they launched an investigation, and the search for the mysterious "Sugar Man" began—unfolding a legend like no other...
