This documentary about village-based first secretaries—about land and responsibility—was also, from a language standpoint, exceptionally demanding to translate. We Are the First Secretaries (我们是第一书记) follows several grassroots cadres through their real experiences in the poverty-alleviation campaign; the dialect-heavy dialogue, policy terminology, and local expressions made subtitle translation its central hurdle. When LI TRUST took on the subtitling, it assembled a dedicated team specializing in policy language and regional dialects. Dialect content was handled on a "meaning first, preserve the flavor" basis—ensuring the message came through clearly while retaining each speaker's linguistic personality. The English subtitles were also written for 2 different readerships, overseas Chinese and international audiences, with word choice adjusted for each. After 3 rounds of professional proofreading, the complete subtitle file was delivered in standard SRT format, supporting multi-platform release on domestic and overseas Chinese-language channels.
