A small coastal town in northern Norway, a maverick hen, and an unexpected emotional bond between human and animal — *Hen* is a Nordic indie film that defies easy categorization, packing profound reflections on solitude, care, and the meaning of life into the simplest of story structures. For LI TRUST's subtitle team, the biggest challenge in producing the Chinese subtitles for this Norwegian-language film came from the distinctive rhythm of Nordic speech. Norwegian dialogue tends to carry heavy emotion through short, restrained expressions — fundamentally different from how Chinese conveys meaning. Literal translation would make the subtitles stiff; free translation risks losing the Nordic texture of the original language. After multiple rounds of discussion, LI TRUST settled on a "simple in form, complete in meaning" strategy, using leaner yet emotionally full Chinese to recreate the film's linguistic style. Deliverables included Chinese SRT subtitles, English SRT subtitles, and a hardcoded-subtitle version prepared for screenings at Nordic film festivals.
