Juliette Binoche's performance in Broken English is the soul of this gentle romance. The title itself is a double entendre: the protagonist's French boyfriend speaks "broken English," and she is just as broken — in her relationship, and in her life. When LI TRUST's subtitle team translated the film, capturing that double meaning was the central task. The French boyfriend's French-language dialogue plays an essential emotional role in the film, and the subtitles had to let Chinese audiences with no knowledge of French feel the dramatic tension of the language barrier — without collapsing the sense of linguistic separation. LI TRUST adopted a differentiated typography approach, using font and color to distinguish the Chinese subtitles from the French dialogue annotations, achieving an intuitive, multi-layered presentation. The film was delivered with complete Chinese and English subtitle packages, with simplified and traditional Chinese versions shipped simultaneously.
