Set in a small Romanian village in September 1953, Lancu (Alexandru Potocean) and Mara (Meda Victor) are about to have their grand wedding. The couple is so in love that they can think of no better way to express it than making love and becoming husband and wife. But just as the celebration is about to begin, news arrives that dictator Stalin has died. To honor the mourning, Lancu and Mara are told they must cancel the wedding.
How could the death of an irrelevant man stand in the way of their love? A silent wedding is born—and “silent” means absolute stillness: no talking, no clinking glasses, no rustling, no chewing, no sound at all. The villagers find a rare joy in defying tyranny and dictatorship, but this unconventional wedding ultimately turns into a funeral.
