Single mother Sachi (Yoh Yoshida) receives a phone call informing her that her son Takashi (Reo Sano) has been killed by a shark while surfing at Hanalei Bay on Kauai, Hawaii. Sachi travels to Hanalei Bay, where her son lost his life. She places a chair under a large tree near the beach and sits reading, as if performing a ritual, year after year. For ten years, she never moves from that spot and never goes near the ocean. One day, Sachi meets two young Japanese surfers who are enjoying the waves to the fullest. In them, she sees the image of her own son, who died in an accident at 19. The young men tell her about a one-legged Japanese surfer who always uses a red surfboard. Determined, Sachi resolves to find him—to find her son.
