Single mother Sachi (Yō Yoshida) receives a call informing her that her son Takashi (Reo Sano) was killed by a shark while surfing at Hanalei Bay on Kauai, Hawaii. She travels to the bay where he died and, year after year, sets up a chair under a large tree near the shore, reading as if performing a ritual. For a decade, she never changes her spot and never goes near the water. One day, she meets two young Japanese surfers who are fully immersed in the waves. In them, she sees the son she lost at 19. When she hears from the young men about a one-legged Japanese surfer who always uses a red surfboard, she decides to find him — to find her son.
