There Will Be Blood
There Will Be Blood
An epic where oil and power intertwine demands language engineering of equal weight. *There Will Be Blood* features extremely dense dialogue, packed with late-19th-century American petroleum industry terminology and Daniel Day-Lewis’s uniquely rhythmic performance. Before starting work, the LI TRUST subtitle team spent two full days systematically mapping the vocabulary of that era—drilling rigs, mineral rights, trust companies—to ensure terms like "rig," "oil field," and "mineral rights transfer" were both accurate and true to period texture in the Chinese subtitles.
The toughest challenge was capturing the rhythm between long silences and sudden outbursts. Subtitle timing had to sync perfectly with the actors' breathing—a single frame off in either direction would break the tension Anderson so carefully built. We applied a four-round QC process: initial translation → terminology check → fine-tuning timecode → lip-sync verification. The final deliverables were in both SRT and SCC formats, with simplified and traditional Chinese versions to cover all distribution channels across the mainland, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.
The film ultimately launched globally with a complete multilingual subtitle package, with LI TRUST serving as the core technical partner for its Chinese-language region support.
