Middle-aged salaryman Shohei Sugiyama (Koji Yakusho) is a diligent, successful office worker, but finds his nine-to-five life empty and monotonous. One evening after work, a tired Sugiyama glances out the train window and spots a woman with a striking, lonely expression gazing into the distance from the window of a building across the street, which bears a sign reading "Kishikawa Dance School." He is deeply captivated by her melancholic look.
A few days later, unable to resist his curiosity, Sugiyama steps into the dance school and begins learning ballroom dancing. The woman he saw is Mai Kishikawa (Tamiyo Kusakari), the instructor. Sugiyama gradually develops a genuine passion for dancing, as do Aoki (Naoto Takenaka) and others in the class.
