Seven and a half hours. Hungarian. Black-and-white. Just those keywords for *Sátántangó* are enough to make any subtitle team think twice. Béla Tarr’s 1994 epic art film is notorious for its extreme stretching of narrative time—a single rain sequence can run a full eight minutes. When LI TRUST’s subtitle team took on this project, we knew it wasn’t just translation work; it was an endurance test. The film has over 1,200 subtitle lines. Hungarian sentence structure is fundamentally different from Chinese, requiring constant long-sentence splitting, clause handling, and consistent treatment of names and places throughout. The team built a dedicated glossary, and after completing all subtitles, ran a continuous seven-and-a-half-hour playback QC pass to ensure absolute consistency in translated terms across the entire runtime. Final deliverables included Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, and English versions, in SRT, ASS, and SCC formats—supporting the film’s full-channel distribution across mainland China, Taiwan, and international festivals.
